Security Risk Assessment
Before spending on guards or cameras, it pays to know where the real weaknesses are. A Vigilant CQ security risk assessment examines your site, its threats and its vulnerabilities, then sets out practical recommendations that balance officers, patrols and electronic security in a written proposal.
- On-site survey by our team
- Threats and weak points mapped
- Balanced, practical recommendations
- Written proposal to keep

When a risk assessment makes sense
Most clients come to us at a turning point. A business has had a break-in or a spate of stock losses. A body corporate is unhappy with its current guarding contract and wants to know what it should actually be paying for. A company is moving into new premises, or a developer has a construction site opening next month. Insurers sometimes ask for evidence that security has been reviewed. In each case the question is the same: what is the realistic threat here, and what is the most sensible way to reduce it?
An assessment answers that question before money is committed, and it prevents the common mistake of adding more manpower to a problem that better lighting, a fence or a monitored alarm would solve more cheaply.
What we look at on site
The survey is a physical walk-through, not a desk exercise. We look at:
- Perimeter: walls, fencing, gates, neighbouring properties and open land.
- Access control: how staff, visitors, contractors and deliveries enter and leave, and how that is recorded.
- Lighting and visibility: dark areas, sight lines from guard posts, vegetation.
- Existing systems: alarms, CCTV, electric fencing, panic buttons, and whether they are working and monitored.
- People and routines: operating hours, cash or high-value stock handling, opening and closing procedures.
- History: incidents reported by you, your staff or your current provider.
Threat and vulnerability assessment
We then weigh what could happen against how likely and how damaging it would be. A warehouse full of copper cable faces different threats from a doctor's rooms or a family home on a busy road. Typical concerns include burglary, theft by staff or contractors, armed robbery, vandalism, trespass and disruption at events. Vulnerabilities are ranked so that you can see which gaps matter most and which are minor.
Our findings are shared with you in plain language. Sensitive detail about weaknesses stays between us and the people you authorise, not in general circulation.
Recommendations and your written proposal
The recommendations combine the three layers that work best together. Guarding, such as static officers at key posts or access control at the gate. Patrols to cover larger sites or quieter hours. Electronic security, including CCTV, alarms, electric fencing and panic buttons linked to armed response. Where low-cost procedural changes would help, we say so.
You receive a written proposal with options, so you can phase improvements over time or prioritise the highest-risk areas first.
After the assessment
There is no obligation to use Vigilant CQ for the work we recommend, although most clients prefer one provider who understands the site. If you go ahead, the assessment becomes the basis for officers' site instructions and system design. We recommend reviewing it when your site changes, after any serious incident, or at contract renewal.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a site survey take?
A home or small office can usually be covered in a single visit. Larger sites such as industrial premises, estates or shopping centres take longer, and sometimes a second visit at night is useful to see lighting and activity after hours. We agree the scope when booking.
Who should be present during the assessment?
Ideally someone who knows the site well, such as the owner, facilities manager or estate manager. They can explain routines, past incidents and access arrangements that are not obvious from a walk-through, which makes the recommendations far more accurate.
Will you just recommend more guards?
No. Officers are one tool among several. Often a smaller guarding presence supported by cameras, alarms, fencing or better lighting gives better protection for the same budget. We explain the reasoning behind every recommendation.
Can you assess a site that already has a security provider?
Yes. Many clients want an independent view before renewing a contract. We assess the current arrangement objectively and tell you where it is working and where the gaps are.
Is the information about my site kept confidential?
Yes. Details of your premises, vulnerabilities and routines are used only to prepare your proposal and run your service, and are handled in line with POPIA and our privacy policy.
