Tracing & locating

Tracing Services

When a debtor moves without a forwarding address, a witness stops answering, or a beneficiary cannot be found, files stall. Our tracing team locates people and identifies assets through lawful sources and careful field enquiries, then reports back in writing so you can take the next step.

  • Lawful sources only
  • Debtors, witnesses, beneficiaries
  • Asset identification
  • Confidential written reports
Tracing Services

Who we trace and why

Tracing is one of the most practical services within our private investigations work. The requests we see most often come from:

  • Businesses and credit providers trying to reach customers who owe money and have moved or changed numbers.
  • Attorneys who need to serve documents on a party or find a witness for a matter.
  • Executors and families looking for heirs or beneficiaries named in a will.
  • Landlords following up on tenants who left with arrears or damage.
  • Individuals hoping to reconnect with a lost contact, where the person has a right to decide whether to be found.

Every instruction must have a legitimate purpose. We decline requests that look like stalking, harassment or an attempt to find someone who has deliberately fled abuse.

How a trace is carried out

A trace starts with what you already know: full name, ID number if you hold it lawfully, last known addresses, employers, phone numbers and vehicle details. The more accurate the starting information, the faster and cheaper the work.

We then work through lawful sources, which may include:

  • information available through registered credit bureaus and other lawful data services, where the purpose permits it;
  • public records such as deeds and company registrations;
  • open-source enquiries, including public social media;
  • discreet field enquiries with neighbours, former employers or associates;
  • physical verification of an address by a field agent.

We do not access phone records, bank accounts or private devices, and we do not place tracking devices on people or their vehicles.

Asset tracing

Knowing where someone lives is not always enough; you may also need to know whether there is anything to recover. Asset tracing looks for property, vehicles, business interests and directorships that can be identified through lawful records and enquiries.

This is useful before deciding whether to pursue a debt through the courts, in support of an attorney's execution process, or in disputes where assets may have been moved. We report what can be verified and say clearly where something is unconfirmed, so that you and your legal advisor can decide what is worth pursuing.

Where an asset needs to be physically moved under a court order, our secure escorts team can provide protection on the day.

POPIA, confidentiality and results

Tracing involves personal information, so we handle it under the Protection of Personal Information Act. We confirm the purpose of each instruction, use only what is needed, share results only with the instructing client and keep files secure.

Results are delivered in a short written report: confirmed address or contact details where found, how they were verified, any assets identified and any limits on the findings. Not every trace is successful; if a person cannot be found with reasonable effort, we tell you what was checked rather than stretching the work out.

Fees and scope are agreed in writing before work begins, and urgent instructions can be discussed with our team.

Frequently asked questions

What information do you need to start a trace?

At minimum a full name and a reason for the trace. An ID number held lawfully, previous addresses, employers, phone numbers and vehicle details all improve the chances of success and usually shorten the time it takes.

Will the person know they are being traced?

Most enquiries are discreet. Where a field agent verifies an address, they do so without disclosing the reason unless the instruction is to make contact, for example to pass on a message from an executor.

Can you find someone's bank account or phone records?

No. Bank and phone records are protected and can only be obtained through proper legal processes. We work with lawful sources and can support your attorney if a court process is needed.

Do you guarantee you will find the person?

No honest tracer can. Most traces with reasonable starting information are resolved, but some people are genuinely hard to locate. If we cannot confirm a result, the report explains what was checked.
